Billy's story

Meeting Billy & Research:

Billy actually approached Super 8 Studios with an idea to create a documentary style interview to address mental health in both life and around football. Sam was absent this day so I took charge in the meeting with Billy, he started by addressing me what his ideas were and what he would like us to create.

I began by giving him some ideas and different references to other peoples interviews to see if he would like that style. After going through a few we decided on a 'Lad Bible' type interview where, it would be simple setup with one chair in the centre of a black background and an interviewer off camera asking questions. The run-time we are aiming for is no longer than 15 minutes to allow the viewer to gather all information without getting bored.

We also went with the another style of documentary to add into the 'lad bible' style interview. The documentary we went for was 'How to be Behzinga', this was a mental health documentary on a famous Youtuber named Behzinga who is a member of the Sidemen. It is a four part series that covers his life and the struggles he's had in his past.

Planning for the Interview:

After the meeting with Billy I started working out how our company would want to tackle this production, I spoke to Sam the next time I saw him and gave him a run down on what Billy wants from us and how he envisions the documentary. However, it came to our attention that neither of us were qualified to be the interviewer and therefore we needed some outside help.

We turned to Digital journalism, this is a course that is qualified for both radio and in-person interviews. We offered this work to the second years of the course to see if anyone was interested. Molly told us she was interested and that she had a good idea in what we could create. We setup a meeting between Super 8 Studios and Molly to discuss our ideas and any ideas she had. Once we had aired out what we would want to create we got to work with Billy to sort out what we needed and when we would begin the shoot.

The hardest part for Super 8 Studios was time management as, we had another shoot in-between this and so we needed to figure out a day that worked best for everyone. The plan was to record the first part of the interview in college as, we already had the black background for the first section of the interview. The next part was more difficult as, we then needed to arrange dates with both his old secondary school and have an interview with his dad, as, these were some of the ideas we had whilst brainstorming.

We wanted to add more people to the interview to get other peoples side of the story and show how from their point of view the effects it had on Billy. We want the interviews to fit the same style as the 'How to be Behzinga' documentary as, we all agreed that we liked the editing style of that series and would like to take inspiration from it.
